Central London CCG has appointed Vocare Ltd, an experienced nationwide provider of urgent care services, to run the urgent care centre at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington on a five year contract.
The St Mary's Hospital Urgent Care Centre (SMHUCC), operates 24/7 throughout the year and is a highly accessible community-based facility providing care for a large population. The UCC has been in operation since 2010 and the contract for its provision was due to expire.
Dr Neville Purssell, Chair of Central London CCG, said: "We were really pleased with the calibre of applicants, but we were clear that Vocare was our number one choice to run the urgent care centre."
Within Central London and North West London, the vision is to create an urgent and emergency care system (one system with multiple facilities) that is capable of delivering equitable access to the right care first time for the majority of patients through a networked model with services provided along robust pathways 24/7. The Urgent Care Centre at St Mary's Hospital forms an important access point on the urgent care network. A key focus of the procurement of the Urgent Care Centre at St Mary's Hospital was to improve the capacity of the UCC service, and the streaming of patients within St Mary's Hospital. These improvements will help to ensure that the UCC can manage the appropriate level of activity and better support patients with urgent care needs as part of the North West London urgent care network.
Vocare provides urgent care services to more than ten million patients across the UK through urgent care centres, GP out-of-hours services, integrated urgent care centres and the NHS 111 service. Headquartered in North East England, Vocare delivers services throughout the country, including the North East, Staffordshire, Somerset, Yorkshire, Leicestershire, the South East and the West Midlands.
John Harrison, chief executive of Vocare, commented: "We are delighted that we have been chosen as the preferred provider for the St Mary's Hospital Urgent Care Centre. Our experience of working across the UK delivering similar services while taking a collaborative approach to working with other healthcare providers locally will help us to ensure the delivery of a high quality service for patients."
Dr Purssell added: "We are now working with Vocare Ltd and the current providers, Imperial College Healthcare Trust (ICHT), to progress the mobilisation of the service, with the aim that the new providers will begin delivering the service by the end of April 2016. The service will continue to be based within St Mary's Hospital and will continue to operate as a 24/7 service. We would also like to take the opportunity to thank Imperial and all the health professionals and other staff who have worked in the UCC for the care they have provided to local people."
